2nd Saturday Block Party Series
As you might imagine, we spend a lot of time in Lavender Heights, so when we saw the sign go up for the 2nd Saturday Block Party series from THIS is Midtown, we knew we had to be there. I don’t know anyone who would disagree, FREE block parties are the best!
We arrived shortly after 5pm and things were just getting started. The organizers had 20th street closed between J and K with a full stage set up on the south side of the block between Lowbrau and The Depot. What’s nice about this block is that the trees cover virtually the entire stretch with shade making it really pleasant to be mixing it up with the lively crowd and great tunes. In addition to the main stage, they had art and wares vendors set up showcasing their local goods, a selfie booth, hula hooping, as well as a skate part on the far north side of the block. Topping off the music, art, and kick-flips, they also had a beverage stand serving regional brews.
By 7pm, things were popping and the street was packed. We were particularly impressed with the local talent on stage giving us some excellent funk/soul/disco vibes. They had the crowd dancing and moving to their every note — it was glorious. We grabbed a quick bite to eat on the patio at Lowbrau and enjoyed the second half of their set with some bratwursts and beers.
We were really impressed with the attendees; everyone was having a fabulous time and were super laid back. We felt very comfortable chatting with strangers, making friends, and dancing around without judgement. It was great seeing everyone dressed to impress and some even came in fun and dazzling costumes.
We hope you’ll join us at the next 2nd Saturday Block Party! The series runs May through September on the second Saturday of each month. You can get more information about future line ups here:
